International Foliage is an affiliated company to a group of farms that have operated in Guatemala for over 100 years under the name of Las
Marias.
Las Marias was started as a coffee plantation in 1880 by Martin De Leon great grandfather of Antonio Mombiela who currently runs the group of agriculture
operation.
As a coffee plantation Las Marias became among the most efficiency producers of coffee and producer of selected coffee seeds.
20 years ago the operation has diversified into ornamental plants for the local market. About 15 years ago the company initiated a mayor diversification program into new products including: Macadamia nuts, Mundani trees, dairy operations, selected varieties of Taiwanese bamboo and the production of organic top soils from California
earth-worms.
About 5 years ago Mr. Mombiela focused on the production of ornamental plants for export and developed several varieties of Peperomias, Maranthas, Aphelandras, and Liriopes and Tree Ferns.
These varieties were chosen because of its excellent adaptability at the climatic and soil conditions of Las
Marias.
Recently the company has acquired nearby properties to expand into foliage like Tree-fern and
Leatherleaf.
In the Caribbean Coast of Guatemala Mr. Mombiela developed the only areca exports plantation for the European
market.
